Rev. Joseph Pang • Pastor & Practicing Visual Artist
Moving beyond modern cynicism and dead intellectualism into the consecrated encounter of the Word and the Spirit.
In the heart of Lower Manhattan, faith is often treated either as a sterile intellectual relic or reduced to subjective emotional noise. At Manhattan Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, our calling refuses both extremes. We stand unapologetically on the historic, robust foundations of Reformed theology, yet we know that theology without the living fire of the Holy Spirit is merely dry parchment.
As a pastor and practicing visual artist, I have spent decades in the studio wrestling with the discipline of form, color, and divine light. True art does not apologize for beauty; neither does genuine Christian faith apologize for the supernatural. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is not an abstract concept to be debated from a distance—He is the living Creator who intervenes in human history, performs miracles, heals the broken, and encounters men and women in the raw reality of their everyday existence.
We do not preach a domesticated gospel tailored to soothe comfortable sensibilities. In a city marked by relentless speed and quiet isolation, we point directly to the cross of Jesus Christ, the power of persistent prayer, and the absolute authority of the Word of God. Here in SoHo, art, music, and deep biblical truth are not decorative accessories—they are the natural expressions of a soul brought alive by the living Lord.
Born into a devout Christian heritage as a third-generation pastor. His great-grandfather was renowned as a man of Abrahamic faith, affectionately remembered as “Pang Jesus” by his neighbors. His grandfather served as an evangelist at Jangdaehyeon Church during the historic 1907 Pyongyang Great Revival, graduated from Pyongyang Theological Seminary, and dedicated his life to both the church and national independence. His father served for decades as a respected senior minister in Flushing, New York, ordained as Pastor Emeritus in 2007.
Rev. Joseph Pang’s ministry and artistic practice are deeply rooted in rigorous academic inquiry, having completed his theological studies at Yale and Princeton. His intellectual journey is defined by a unique intersection of classical divinity, linguistic rigor, and modern scholarly disciplines. Rather than viewing intellectual discipline and charismatic faith as opposing forces, his work demonstrates that genuine Christian devotion demands the full engagement of the mind, the conscience, and the creative spirit.
With foundational training spanning analytic philosophy, aesthetics, and the philosophy of language, he explores how human speech and visual forms communicate transcendent realities. During divinity school, his scholarly concentration centered on Hermeneutics and Old Testament Criticism—examining the ancient Hebrew scriptures with philological precision while honoring their divine inspiration and covenantal authority.
This dual heritage—the intellectual depth of historic Reformed scholarship paired with decades of disciplined studio practice—informs every dimension of his calling in SoHo. Whether addressing the intellectual inquiries of Manhattan’s university communities or proclaiming the living power of the cross, his ministry bridges classical biblical literacy with contemporary cultural engagement.
